2024 Pharmacy Workforce Insights: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities in New Zealand

The 2024 Pharmacy Workforce Demographic Report, published by the New Zealand Pharmacy Council, provides an in-depth analysis of the trends and characteristics of practising pharmacists as of mid-2024.

It reveals a 2.4% increase in the number of practising pharmacists, reaching a total of 4,875. The report highlights that 56% of the workforce is under 40, and 67% are women, reflecting the profession's continued feminization. Additionally, workforce challenges, such as regional distribution disparities, capacity constraints, and the impact of international mobility (especially to Australia), are discussed in detail.

The report also examines practice settings, with the majority of pharmacists working in community pharmacies, followed by hospital and academic/research roles. Registration pathways, including the contribution of overseas-trained pharmacists, are analyzed, noting their vital role in addressing workforce shortages. The data underscores the need for strategic initiatives to improve workforce retention, regional access, and service sustainability in the face of growing healthcare demands.
