The Australian Self-Medication Industry has downplayed the relevance to Australian consumers of Mon night’s ABC Four Corners program about complementary medicines with ASMI ceo Deon Schoombie saying “there is a vast difference between the way the US and Australia regulate these medicines”. He said the TGA requires CMs to be manufactured to medicinal standards, with the agency conducting a safety assessment on ingredients in listed complementary medicines.
“Companies marketing complementary medicines can only make limited claims regarding their effectiveness and are required to hold evidence supporting these claims,” with the TGA also maintaining a rigorous system for recording, monitoring and responding to adverse events for all medicines, including CMs.
